Room 302. Currently we have a story in residence. I Am Infinity was my entry for the Fall 2010 issue of The First Line, a literary journal that provies a first sentence every quarter, and the writer's job is to write a 3,000-words-or-fewer story that starts with this line. Or, more accurately, it would have been my submission except my email never got sent and by the time I figured that out, the deadline had passed. So this story never even had a chance, because I didn't listen closely enough for the little whoosh that the email program makes when an email goes out. I just submitted another story to them this past week, and got for the first time ever a confirmation email from them a few minutes later. Nice to see they've taken it upon themselves to help us scatterbrained writers who don't always pay attention to the technical details.
The nature of this first line, as you'll see, lends itself to science fiction. I tried a couple of awkward science fiction stories for this and decided I was in no mood to finish any of them. So instead I wrote kind of an anti-science-fiction story. Or at least I think I did. Read it and see if you agree.
I'm working on a couple of other stories right now, including possibly one written exclusively for this page. It's been awhile since I've done that and I'm kind of in the mood. Maybe it'll happen, and maybe it won't. You'll know shortly after I do. But until then, this is the chance I got to tell another Tale
from Room 302.
Please ring the bell for service...
